E. B. & S. Ward's Steamers Ironstone Plate - Date?

by Phil Easdown
(Kent, United Kingdom)

I am trying to date an ironstone plate which has 2 backstamps, the main backstamp is a belted garer surmounted by a crown. The wording reads "Mayer's Real Ironstone, Office 69 Pearl Street New York. The second backstamp in an ornate oblong box which states " Imported by A. E. Mather & Co Detroit. Sorry no pictures but any help in finding an approximate date for these marks would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Phil

E.B. Ward is my husband's great-great-great-great grandfather. Amazing that you have a plate from one of his steamships!

depending on the design varient, your plate dates to the 1840's or 1850's. China with "E. B. & S. Ward's Steamers" was found on the shipwreck "Atlantic" which sank in Lake Erie, USA in 1852.
